My daughter loves fairy tales and we hadn't read this particular edition before. The illustrations are comical and there's a nice selection here. (Including the ridiculous "Hans")
The original Grimm’s fairy tales are true children’s stories. If you’ve ever heard a five-year-old tell a story, you know what I mean. They’re full of non sequiturs and random events. People turn into animals for no reason, and then turn back into humans for no reason. Go blind? Just wait for a princess’s tears to restore your sight. Shoes too small? Just chop off a toe or your heel so they fit. Think you are dead? Maybe it's just an apple bit stuck in your throat. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and sometimes good things happen to bad people. The only constants are that step-mothers are always wicked and beautiful princesses are always better than everyone else. The only moral is that life is chaotic and unpredictable.
Los cuentos están bien, pero varios son repetitivos, es mejor leer una antología de cuentos de menos cuentos para tener más variedad en lugar de varios que suenen parecidos.
This was a very easy read. I kind of expected more, thinking that the original version of the fairytales would be really interesting to read. I quickly realized that I don't even remember the details of the fairytales I heard growing up, so i couldn't really compare the originals to them. I wouldn't recommend this book, simply because I don't think the stories would appeal to an audience other than children. Overall, it didn't take me long to finish this, because I had time on my hands and the stories were very simple and easy.
I remember reading this book as a child, and many of the stories have stayed with me. It was a very different experience to read them as an adult though, as many of the themes are now so outdated. I found myself getting angry with all the misogyny and violence against women in many of the stories. I was also interested to note how many of the stories referenced God. The other thing that fascinated me was trying to work out why only a small proportion of the tales have been made into hollywood movies. On reading all of the stories, there are many that I think would have made better films than the ones which have been used, such as "The Six Swans" and "The Shoes which were danced to Pieces".
El libro está bien para leer los típicos cuentos de toda la vida con sus verdaderos finales, lo único que está escrito de forma bastante infantil y es algo que no me esperaba.
While I don't doubt the Grimm brothers' contributions to fairytales, these stories got incessantly repetitive and incoherent. I did like The Fisherman and His Wife though. DNF 30%
What I've learned from reading The Complete Grimm's is that if you name your kid Hans he'll end up in a fairy tale.
our parents owned an old copy of all the collected Brothers Grimm's works...they read us the more sensible ones, but even then i remember being alternately frightened and fascinated by the darkness of the stories and the fantastic-ness of the situations those poor fictional people found themselves in - selling your daughter for a head of cabbage, confessing your secrets to an empty stove, marrying a wife-killer, entertaining a bear/prince...these men were depressing geniuses...nothing is better than these original fairytales...the sad endings are better than the happy ones...
