As much as I love reading Toni Morrison's work, reviewing Toni Morrison's work is a challenge. Of course, her writing is rich and masterful in Love, and, as usual, it took every single one of my brain cells to get into the story.
Love is a complex tale about multiple women affected in some way by wealthy and troubled hotel owner Bill Cosey. The book depicts the dark places people will go on behalf of love and allegiance and addresses many other themes like female friendship and how socioeconomic disparities can play out in a Black community (to name a few).
Central to the story is that the infamy of one man has a stronghold on so many women in his life, even after his death. I loved Love because it allows the reader to enter the psyche of these women, consider all the ways love can manifest, and "witness" how love can get dark and go wrong. This intergenerational story with interwoven narratives is yet another lovely piece of Morrison's work that offers plenty of food for thought.
