I was honestly not expecting such a satisfying ending but I was very pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed every minute of this book. My only gripe is that I wish the five main characters were able to spend more time together throughout the entire series, but I can't hold that against just this one.

I'll probably read the next series, too, because this one ended so well.

Now that I've finished the first five books, I've noticed a trend in which I rate the books narrated by my favorite characters lower than the books narrated by characters I enjoy more generically. I suspect this is because I enter my favorite characters' books with higher expectations than usual. Despite the slight variations in my reviews, each of these first five installments has been very solid and enjoyable to read.

My main gripe with this book is that I was hoping that more of the protagonists would be present for the majority of the novel, like when the story was told from Clay's POV. I've enjoyed following individual characters (Tsunami in the second book, especially), but I was hoping that a big finale like Sunny's wouldn't involve as many solo missions.

While the ending was satisfying overall, and just as fast-paced as the rest of the series... And while I loved seeing Sunny's individual adventures and am glad she got to narrate the finale... I was more than a little surprised that the plot took the direction it did. I am left still wanting follow-ups to plots begun in previous installments; though I am hopeful that these narrative threads will continue in the Wings of Fire books I've yet to read.

To end on a positive note (and with a spoiler for the very end of this novel): I love Sunny's gradual realization that she doesn't reciprocate Starflight's romantic attraction. To see this in any story, but especially in one geared towards kids (where storybook romances abound) is incredibly refreshing, and it gives Sunny an extra degree of agency that warms my heart. She has truly gone from an unassuming side character (the "nice one" I never thought would get much of a story) to one of my favorite dragons thanks to her unique and unexpected character arc. I hope that Sunny makes cameos in later books, so that I can continue to fawn over her.

Sunnnyyyyyyyy!! Mon bebeeee.
Note 17/20

After Starflight’s book, I was a little hesitant about Sunny’s storyline… but I shouldn’t have been. The story was well paced and was intriguing. Blaze is annoying as usual and Starlight is no longer last on my list (Glory is still first tho). I enjoyed all the emotions brought out by this story. Got teary eyed towards the end along with anger towards the author…. But I’m over it now.

Tied things up nicely.
SpoilerIt's silly for me to focus on in a book filled with epic dragon battles, but I found it oddly refreshing that Sunny doesn't realize she has feelings for Star Flight. It's a healthy message about friendship in the face of unrequited love.
