Read April 18, 2022 - April 22, 2022. Audiobook.
Man, this series is so fun. I adore the world-building, and the characters are all so lovable (even the ones that are less than sweet... which is a lot of them, LOL). With the end of this book comes the end of the first arc of Wings of Fire, and I think it did wrap up quite nicely. I'd be curious to know how much planning Tui Sutherland did for this series in advance of writing, because it all just fell together so perfectly without feeling too forced, y'know? The world is so vast, and there are so many characters, and we're jumping around to different POVs every book, but it all felt like it was told exactly as it should have been without any character feeling like they had a book "just because". I dunno, I just admire how well it's written.
It was also very nice to get to see Sunny finally shine! She, along with Starflight, is one of the dragonets I related to most, so it was nice to see her really come into her own.
Also I'm really sad that the Sunny and Starflight ship didn't pan out, because they SO CUTE and I shipped them so hard in the last book, but I mean, I can kind of see it too. I'm not the biggest fan of Fatespeaker but as long as my boy is happy that's all that matters.
And I LOVE the snark between Deathbringer and Glory. It's amazing, 10/10. I hope they stay together and do end up having their own dragonets like Sunny was imagining, because that would be adorable.
Shipping aside, I really liked how in the end, the prophecy did come true, even if the prophecy itself was fake. A self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts! And it followed it to the letter, even if it wasn't in a way anyone expected. Also I loved Blaze's reaction: "I'm the sister who gets to live?"
I also really enjoyed the fact that Smolder had a "pet" scavenger, and I hope we get to see more dragon-scavenger interactions at some point because that was hilarious. Maybe Sunny will go back and visit her friends Fluffy and Holler? LOL.
Anyway, it has been a very fun ride and I'm looking forward to eventually carrying on with book 6! For now, though, I think I'll take a bit of a break and read some other things before picking up this series again for the action-packed (I'm sure) second arc!

Spoiler
I love that she finally got to be the one to save the day, and I think the distance from her friends really did her some good. And I'm SO glad that Sunny actually gets a good mom!! Seeing some of the other parents in this series had me a bit worried that it would be even more of a letdown for her, but mama Thorn was all I wanted and more <3 Stonemover was... and interesting guy, but I didn't dislike him! Though Thorn is definitely my favourite of the two and I love love love that she got to be the new Sandwing queen. As soon as Sunny found the onyx eye I was like "please give it to Thorn please please" because as much as I love Sunny I knew she wouldn't be queen. It's just not her thing. But, I digress. Also I'm really sad that the Sunny and Starflight ship didn't pan out, because they SO CUTE and I shipped them so hard in the last book, but I mean, I can kind of see it too. BEST ONE YET!!!!! I LOVED READING IT!!!!!
Minor: Blood
At the end of the last book, the dragonets had learned that the prophecy had been fake. The entire reason for their existence, the way to end the war, had been made up by the nightwings for reasons unknown. But Sunny is struggling to believe it. If the prophecy is fake, then maybe she really is useless. But, Sunny refuses the believe that. In a last-ditch effort to try and prove the prophecy really is true, she leaves the rainforest without telling any of her friends.
What she discovers opens her eyes to many things, answer some questions while raising even more. I also liked that we got to see more of the scavengers. Viewing scavengers through the eyes of the dragons was really fun.
This story was fun and engaging. I look forward to continuing the story with the next book - especially with the way this one ended.
