this book had me ugly crying in seat 13A of an Air Canada flight
emotional informative sad
Strong character development: Yes

So so incredible!! Everyone should read

So I had the ebook (was not seeing the cover much) and only realized it was not a memoir as I finished it just now. The writing blew me away, absolutely gorgeous. And important. Illustrates how much racism takes away - careers, safety and how a person fights to overcome the consequences. I will continue to mourn with those impacted by residential schools and Canadian racism and colonialism and fight for justice.
emotional informative reflective medium-paced

This is a well written book - a fictional account of residential schools and someone trying to break in the hockey scene in the 1960s as an indigenous male. While it's "ficitional", let's be honest - this is a very true account of the schools, being taken from family, and then the struggle following leaving the schools. Honestly, how many indigenous people were stopped from chasing their dreams or pursuing something they are good at because of racism and trauma?! I'm not a huge sports in books person myself, and there was a lot of hockey descriptions (of course it's part of the story), but I do think it can make this story more approachable to a lot of people. Loved the writing and cannot wait to read more from Richard Wagamese!

Not sure the last decade I read a novel in one sitting, but it wasn't the last one.  This was compelling and I couldn't put it down.
