This has proven to be an interesting audiobook, to say the least.

Having studied aboriginal history in the past, and undoubtedly continuing to study it in the future (being a topic close to my heart), I was very interested in listening to this fictitious account of the aboriginal experience in Canada in the late twentieth-century and early twenty-first century. Plus, it was free for Audible Canada listeners.

This story is told from the perspective of Saul “Indian Horse” recounting his life events while his is in an addiction services centre. He begins by discussing his family when he was a child living in northern Ontario and quickly begins to discuss how his life changed when he was forced to enter the aboriginal residential school system. At the school, Saul becomes inundated with the hockey team as he helps maintain the ice-rink, and soon thereafter finds himself playing hockey as part of the team. The bulk of the story involves Saul describing the exploits of his ice-hockey career and the discrimination he faced for being an aboriginal man.

I’m not particularly interested in hockey, so when the narrative of this novel shifted it’s focus to Saul’s experiences on the ice, I slightly lost interest in the story. I did still appreciate the aboriginal cultural aspects of the story and I finished listening to the audiobook.

Overall, “Indian Horse” is a good fictitious account of the types of experiences that aboriginal people face in Canada. With the bulk of the story being focused on hockey (something I’m not incredibly interested in), I’ve decided to rate this audiobook 3/5, rather than 4/5. Seeing as how it’s a freebie for Audible Canada listeners, you may as well take advantage of the promotion and listen to it.

This book is an absolute must read for everyone.
