i know i frequently use the word beautiful to describe the books i read, but this one is the embodiment of beauty. although the actual plot is painful to read, the author tells the story of a young indigenous boy with passion, soul, and power.
the novel not only painted an incredibly vivid picture as to what life was like in residential schools, but it also highlighted the beauty of indigenous culture and spirituality. through the authors storytelling, i was able to grasp the ideas and concepts of their culture, that had been shamelessly pushed under the rug.
the story itself pushed me to educate myself more on indigenous lives, both in a historical, and present day context. i have never finished a book and felt the same gut wrenching feeling as i have since finishing this. it was genuinely the best book i have ever read.
i would wholeheartedly urge everyone to read this novel for themselves, it is profound, heartfelt, and ultimately life changing.
