This book is bleak. It's so beautiful. There was something on each page to cherish... And it's over and my tummy hurts. Gah.

Beautifully written and extremely insightful. I think I was overly dismissive of Hella - I initially found her somewhat two-dimensional, but the concerns she raised around gender relations have stayed with me. I think my early view of her was somewhat coloured by how David sees her. Other reviewers have expressed it in terms more articulate than I can, but however one feels about David and his choices, it is hard not to be moved by his plight. I found myself most affected by it.

For a short book it was a struggle to get through it. Not particularly likeable characters, with nothing of real interest to keep me gripped. Understand the tensions of the underlying sexual orientation struggles, which could have been better developed.
