This book deserves all its credit. It’s so well written that, even though it has +700 pages, you wish there was more. You fall in love with all the characters, small and big, as you watch them go through the hardships of real life. I didn’t cry as much as people said I would, because I felt like a deeper reaction was needed for what I was reading. At times it made me feel too angry to continue reading, physically sick to my stomach to where I felt like I would throw up. It makes you think about your life, and the life of those around you, about the years you’ll live together and how you’ll watch them grow, work, love, die. I only wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

I have a lot of thoughts on this book but yet my head feels empty. This book is dark and definitely deserving of its description of “trauma porn.” However, these characters are lovable and real making it to a degree, hard to let go.

This novel falls into a pattern of repetitive trauma and triggers that slightly escalate at each occurrence to the point they become unbelievable. I was buddy reading this book with my boyfriend. After he completed the book before me and we discussed up to the point I had reached, I realized by his description most of my qualms with the story up to this point only proceed to become more pronounced as the novel continues. I would HIGHLY caution  anyone from picking up this book unless you are equipped to deal with the sheer quantity of trauma this novel dumps on you. I’d advise looking through the content warnings and taking them seriously. If I had to give an overall rating, I’d say it warrants a 2/5. My qualms with the plot and characters doesn’t fully overshadow Hanya Yanagihara’s beautiful writing.
