I'm giving this book 2 of 5 stars because I really liked Axel - who was always complaining about the journey and trying to escape it one way or another - and found Professor Liedenbrock very entertaining. But the story didn't do anything for me. It lacked action and has too much scientific gibberish and nonsense.

This is a hard book to wrap my head around. Set as a memoir type book depicting the "author's" experiences traveling to the center of the Earth, it provides more detail at times about the journey than what I thought would have been necessary. Written in the second half of the 1800s, I can see the outside influences from naturalist and geographers like Humboldt and the way in which stories were written at the time. The first half of this was very hard for me to get through. I really appreciated how much this book tried to pull in environmental and geologic histories and science into the novel but I feel that it was too heavy handed in how much detail was provided. After over 100 pages discussing their travels through rock caverns, the more exciting events that this book is known for finally showed up. I really appreciate the more detailed scientific references in this section because they were only momentarily mentioned rather than overly explained. I think by doing it this way, it helped to provide a quick but detailed image of what was going on. I do have to say, I felt that these parts which I really did enjoy were too short and the conclusion anticlimactic and unrealistic.

I know this is a scifi and many of the "scientific" details in this book are stretched or completely made up but if that's the case, provide some more detail as to why this was able to happen. We all know wood burns in general. Explain why this wood didn't burn like everything else. Create some explanation like due to the location it altered the make up of the wood and made it harder to burn or something along those lines. With that in mind, I am very happy that I did finally get around to reading this. I am not a very big classics person but I would be willing to continue on with some of the other classic scifis and fantasies in the future.

This book was an easy read, which is something that I was not expecting, and was written to show that human beings can and will explore everything the world has to offer if they are given the resources and chance. It is written in a style of a journal and shows an adventure between a man and his uncle who are trying to obtain scientific greatness so that they can be remembered forever by the world.

I must say one of the explorers (he who wrote the book) in my opinion shows the natural fear of human beings being scared of the unknown and apprehension that one may feel when dealing with someone you are not use to; while the other shows the urge for human beings to accomplish something, be remembers and want to participate in exploration of the world around them. I can't help but also feel like the book shows destruction which human beings are not scared to inflict on the planet. Throughout the journey and even afterwards not once have the explorers thought about how their actions will effect those around them, both animals and humans, thinking that with humans they can buy their way out of any conflict where as with animals finding themselves without much thought at all. Additionally, it showed that people when they are treated fairly will go great lengths for those who treat them this way, in this case this is shown by the guide who never questions or argues with them but at the end leaves them with a smile on his face and fond memories of their adventures.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested or rather scared of classical books, such as I use to be before this one, so that they will be able to dip their toes into the topic without being overwhelmed. It is a book that is really easy to relate to and clearly has many sub-contexts that you can find if you look for them.

3.5/5
Filmini dəfələrlə izləyib sevən biri kimi kitabda da eyni hadisələrin baş verəcəyini düşünürdüm. Macəra qismində geri qalsa da nəzərə almaq lazımdı ki, bu kitab yazıldığı dövrə görə tamamilə yenilik olub. Jül Verni hər oxuyanda xəyal gücünə bir daha heyran oluram.

I really need to stop reading books from the 1800's it doesn't suit my brain patterns. good book
adventurous medium-paced
Loveable characters: Yes

Starts off really good but then becomes very dull.

The characters are one-dimensional, but they are surprisingly funny and entertaining.

It's when they first start the journey that things get boring. A lot of time is spent on long passages about rocks and the characters just wandering around.

It does pick up again a bit once they get to the "center." But not enough for me to give it more than a 3.5 rating.
