Interesting

A Journey to the Center of the Earth is an exciting tale about a professor and his nephew, with the guidance of an Icelandic hunter, and their journey to the center of the earth.

This book is obviously revered by many as a great work of fiction, and I personally agree. Each new step within the book is somehow less believable than the previous, all culminating to them being shot out of a volcano to end the book. Despite the preposterous nature of the subject, Jules Verne is able to somewhat ground it in science, due to the exposition given through the studious professor, which somehow explains how each magical event is occurring.

The relationship between the professor and the nephew I found to be quite funny actually. The entire book, the nephew doubts pretty much everything his uncle says, and yet the unwavering confidence of the professor overcomes all, leaving a fun dichotomy of total disbelief and complete confidence. Having a neutral party there in Hans, the hunter, makes it even funnier when the nephew thinks his uncle is going insane. The relationships of the party are well written and enjoyable to read.

The grammar in this book is surprisingly difficult, as I found myself using the dictionary feature on my ebook quite a bit. Despite that, I powered through and got a fun read out of it.

My main complaint about this book is I found myself getting a bit bored before they encountered the central sea. The descent into Sneffels was the hardest to get through, since I didn't necessarily feel any sort of suspense with what might happen to the crew. Since this book is written from the perspective of the nephew after the journey has already completed, I never felt like something drastic was going to happen (chiefly, when they were dying of thirst, I couldn't feel any urgency since I knew they were going to make it through it).

Despite this, this book is worth the read, and it genuinely stands the test of time when it comes to works of fiction. It's a fun, short read that any reader should add to their list of books to read.

Let's be honest I was mainly listening to this for Tim Curry's narration.

This book was easy to read, but the plot wasn't particulary exciting. I liked the characters.
