I can always count on this series to be enjoyable. I was in a bit of a book funk and grabbed this off the shelf. Everytime I return to the world of Peter, Nightingale, and the rivers, it's like seeing a bunch of old friends. This was especially true considering that many of the normal characters were missing from the previous story.

If you've gotten this far in the Rivers of London series, you know the drill. Peter is called upon to investigate a crime, there's some magic involved, the mystery deepens, and the "normal" police are both exasperated and thankful for the help of the Folly. I thought this mystery was good, and it was an added bonus that it moved the major series villain story along as well. Overall, a great addition to the series. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2

Another reasonably good but sort of draggy one.

Guleed is good, but there are other ways to establish Peter's working-class background than having Peter say "Me and Guleed did this, me & Guleed did that" about six times a page. His English is flawless otherwise, and the occasional misspelled homonym might be Pater, or Ben, or the publisher.

There are maybe starting to be a few too many powerful magicians getting involved at once - feels as if there's more of that in each book.

And chasing the Faceless Man forever? Tribute to Moriarty, I suppose, but I've seen too many series now where there's always that one guy who's awesomely evil and awesomely slippery and oh so smooth. Mix it up a bit, authors. Or find a new villain.

I always like this author's one-liners, and there might be more in this book than previous ones. Usually observations about the human condition, or specific to policing.

I suppose I have to read #7 now.

I always forget how much I enjoy this series in between books. It's nice to see Peter's growth and experience actually showing through, even though it seems to have meant that Nightingale was sidelined again. I love his--and the author's--perspective on the world, and watching the world of the series grow.

Better and better. I don't hand out five stars very often, but this series is really good and just gets better as the world broadens and the characters get deeper.
