Wasn't my cup of tea, but have to say I don't think I've read a book like this before. It's a book that focus in 3 days of a 16 years old life in the 1940s. Very conversational and the character repeats himself and contradicts himself within the same page. The novel breaks a lot of the "English rules" we're taught in school and seems to go on tangents, but that's part of its appeal. It reminded me some what of Slaughterhouse Five.

Post book club update, I now have a very different perspective. This is a story of finding a purpose and dealing with trauma.

Read this in high school and remembered it was a very interesting yet peculiar book. I figured I should read it again 10 years later to see how I feel about it. Holden is definitely a whiney character with a lot of teenage angst, but he has a lot of emotions and you can feel those conflicting and confusing emotions. He wants to feel loved but doesn't really know how to show love. He's a good kid though despite everything he's been through. It's a must read at least once in your lifetime. Probably better if you read it at a younger age rather than waiting otherwise you'll just be super annoyed with the characters.
