A few elements were quite original, but many seemed borrowed. It also felt like a long set up for the sequel. There was a distinct YA flavor; that's not necessarily a bad thing, I just wasn't expecting it.
I really enjoyed this quirky book, and didn't find that the fact that it was based around old pictures made it feel contrived. I particularly enjoyed the fact that it was quite a bit darker than other YA books; I think this would really appeal to 13-15 year olds. I was a bit bored by the main character, but the setting, the other characters, and the plot line are interesting enough that I'll continue reading the series.

Wow. And this is only the first book? I can't believe what I just read. A masterpiece for sure. I actually can see this book being turned into some type of thriller/horror tv show or movie series. Tv show please. A very mysterious island. A creepy abandoned orphanage. Strange and uncomfortable photographs. What more can you ask for?
This was a very thrilling read and experience and I loved it very much. Horrific tragedies, fantasy, and dangerous things go on in this book. The writing is super amazing. The characters are very unique and different then anything I have ever read. I definitely enjoyed it very much. I am sad it took me so long to pick up this series, but I am very glad to finally have picked it up.
I did find the main character not annoying which is rare. Since I often hate the main characters when it comes to most large series. But I do think that Jacob will be an amazing hero and will help these peculiar's out. I can't wait to continue reading Jacob's journey towards unlocking the mystery of time travel and the hollows.

I loved this book! It had creepy vintage photos on some of the pages that are really cool to look at.
