The book seemed to me rather uneventful, which sad because there are many plots. Most of them seemed to me dull, but one of them did peak and was interesting in a away. Unfortunately it was resolved anticlimactically.
As a stand alone book I believe it would be better, but as a prelude to Dune it seemed nothing special, nothing at all, which is disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were to high. Hopefully the next books will do justice to this story.

There are a lot of people who don't like the Brian Herbert/KJA Dune novels, but I'm not one of them. While certainly never as good as anything the welder Nerbert ever wrote, I always enjoy returning to the world and seeing other sides of things. This one is as heavily politically layered as any of the core Dune novels, perhaps even more so. If anything, one can view these as fanfic, and I think they add to the world well.
Essentially, it's passable Dune fanfiction. Brian doesn't have the well crafted writing style that his father had, but this sets up a prequel trilogy nicely.

It reads like a pulp novel, which would be fine except that this is part of the Dune universe. There is so much wasted wasted pages expounding on nothing. There could a lot edited down and would make this a better novel.
