Fans of Doris Kearns Goodwin's work will recognize how she covers topics she has written about before. She looks at critical moments in the early and later life of Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR and LBJ. Each moment is one when the right man for the time oversaw progressive legislation. Well known actors read the audio version of this book effectively. The author, herself, reads the epilogue.
The original DKG never disappoints. I took little bits of practical wisdom from various episodes in these giants' lives, from the TR's negotiation over the coal strike to LBJ's intentional positioning of mentors in his life.
Such a cool book. Learned a lot about a few important leaders in the country as well as a few things about leadership as well. Very good stuff.
Superbly written, well organized and a real joy to read. if all history were written like this, no one would ever call it boring.
What a fun book, allowing one to compare and consider the paths and leadership styles of four of our best-known presidents - Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, and Johnson. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing. 18 hours long. Now I am beginning her T. Roosevelt and Taft book - 35 hours long!
Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, LBJ. The author has written about all 4 in the past but here she brings them all together to examine what makes a leader. I've read her books on Lincoln and FDR and not the other two, but now I think I will. I liked how the book was set up in order to juxtopose the men during similar periods of their lives; growing pains, early political careers, turbulent times. I liked that while she highlighted their strengths she didn't shy away from their shortcomings. I've tried reading history based on the subject but I've found I do much better when I find an author who is engaging. Fortunately this time the author and the subjects both worked for me.
A comparison of the leadership styles of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and LBJ. There is some biographic parts but concentrates on their leadership styles in their moments of crisis in their Presidency. It would be interesting to compare these leaders to G.W.Bush during 911, and Trump/Biden during their response to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
I didn't know that the author worked in the LBJ White House staff.

Interesting portraits of these four men and the qualities that made them great leaders. Some of the chapters were more compelling than others (trust busting was a bit of a snooze for me.) The book left me eager to learn more about Theodore Roosevelts adventures and Lyndon Johnson’s success with civil rights and failures in the Vietnam war.
