Great Expectations

Classic novels are always a challenge to get through. The language is different and their storytelling can seem random. I did, however, really enjoy this story. It was packed with drama but also packed an emotional punch. I always enjoy Dickens's writing style, and I really enjoyed being in the world he created for Pip.

Just when I started to give up on trying to like the novel and thinking that I didn’t like Dickens, the book hit me with some twists and turns reminiscent of a Tale of Two Cities and like, but not as complex as, the Count of Monte Cristo. I absolutely loved the bones of the plot, but I’ve degraded the rating of the novel as it was longer than it could’ve been and a little too long for my liking. It’s an interesting web of characters and plot, with plenty of character development along the way. I wonder if there’s any modern adaptations.

The world is a better place because Dickens existed. No matter which one, I find his novels to be such comfort reads. The overall atmosphere that he builds with his words just warms my heart every single time.

Now one of my absolute favorite books of all time! Not only is the plot detailed and ingenious, the characters are so deep, the setting's history is fascinating, and the feelings that it provokes in the reader are indescribable. I love this book!

Although I respect that writing style and strength of writing that Charles Dickens possess this book was just not for me. I couldn't relate to the main character and throughout the story he was very annoying to me except for when he matured toward the end of the novel. This was too little too late for me. I love happy endings as much as the next guy and I love that Dickens wrote two endings but, call me uncreative, I don't like it when novels are ended in ambiguity. For instance I could not deal with the end of The Giver I wanted to know what exactly happened to them not what I think happened to them At the very end when Pip says, "I saw no shadow of another parting from her." I can assume what he means by this but I reallllly like it when endings all come together with a pretty little bow on it. I could not deal with the end of The Giver I wanted to know what exactly happened to them not what I think happened to them. I'll probably come back to this book later in my life and have a greater appreciation for it.
