OOF my heart. This one suffered a little bit from middle book syndrome, and it felt really slow at parts. I did like the first book better. But god I care so much for these characters and I’m so afraid for them! No one is safe.

The author does an amazing job of making you feel every emotion the characters do, and then rips your heart out multiple times over.

Some of my rambling thoughts about the book to try and explain my two star rating:

This is the scariest two stars I’ve ever given and I am so so sad to give it such a low rating. I loved the poppy war and it is one of my favourite books, so my expectations for this book were naturally very high.

The dragon republic was way too long and the pacing was so slow. Way too much and nothing at all happened in this book. Nothing would happen for so many pages and then suddenly everything would happen in 10 pages and then back to nothing.

I liked how the book explored Rin’s trauma from the first book but other than that there were no growth or character development. The book also didn’t really fully explore the trauma of the other characters.

In the first book Rin was strong and cool and empowering and in this one she just acted like a child. Also Rin’s sudden romantic obsession with Altan seemed weird and forced.

This book was just a lot of talking and travelling and plotting but nothing really happened. And istg the seal was so annoying. However the depiction of war and the politics and plans and everything were so impressively written.

A lot of the characters from the first book wasn’t really a part of this book (or only briefly took part) and I missed them and their relationship dynamics so much.

I liked the exploration of Nezha and Rin’s relationship and also Rin’s friendship with Kitay.

Also I felt like something was missing in the writing. It didn’t feel as magical and I didn’t feel all the emotions the characters felt as I did in the first one.

I did cry a little in the end when Suni, Baji and Ramsa died however that was only because of how attached I had gotten to them in the first book - this book didn’t contribute to that at all. I just feel like this book really didn’t bring much to the table.

The poppy war was impossible to put down and this one was nearly impossible to pick up. I am very glad I had the audiobook to help me through it. I really hope I like the burning god as much as I loved the poppy war.
