This is a book that I read quite some time ago; her writing is so vivid that sometimes her imagery still pops into my head.

Este libro es un verdadero clásico. Aunque para mi fue una lectura difícil (pasé casi un año leyéndolo 😅) es una historia importante e inolvidable que explora lo que significa ser humano, la mezcla de lo bueno y lo malo que existe en el mundo, y los ciclos que se repiten generación tras generación. El realismo mágico mezclado con el comentario sociopolítico es ingenioso y leerlo después de las elecciones más recientes aquí en Estados Unidos fue casi como leer un aviso del pasado para nuestro futuro posible. Aunque había cosas que pasaron al final que me frustraron mucho, reconozco la realidad que se refleja en los eventos que ocurrieron y me quedo inspirado por las últimas palabras narradas por la protagonista al final:
“Me será muy difícil vengar a todos los que tienen que ser vengados, porque mi venganza no sería más que otra parte del mismo rito inexorable. Quiero que mi oficio es la vida y que mi misión no es prolongar el odio…”

La historia tiene bastantes altibajos, pero al final es eso lo que lo convierte en algo increíble para contar. Cada personaje es excéntrico a su manera, con sus virtudes y defectos tan humanos que al final no puedes odiar a ninguno (bueno, tal vez a uno). Combinar la historia de una familia y de un país ha sido un viaje interesante, un poco desgastante incluso. Los últimos capítulos me rompieron el alma, pero el epílogo se queda como un final ideal, que te llena de esperanza y que al final, todo lo que pase en esta vida, sea bueno o malo, tiene razón de ser.
I had no idea what to expect when I started this book. But wow, in the end it turned out to be an incredible tribute to the people of Chile living in political upheaval.
this was so so so amazing. the beautiful narrative of the maternal generations, the informative historical fiction, and the subtle magical realism was so expertly written and beautifully conveyed. i was so moved and i feel like i learned a lot too. it doesn’t get better than that!
Es un libro excelente, me parece admirable la capacidad de nuestra autora para llevar tantas tramas a la vez y que todos los personajes sean redondos aún así.
El motivo de la falta de la 5 estrella no es otro que su final, la trama es en todo momento descorazonadora, te impide dejar de leer y por lo tanto esperaba un final a ese nivel, desde mi parecer no ha sido así.

this book had me from the first description of Rosa's tablecloth embroidery: "creatures that were half bird and half mammal, covered with iridescent feathers and endowed with horns and hooves, and so fat and with such stubby wings that they defied the laws of biology and aerodynamics. She rarely thought about her fiancé, Esteban Trueba, not because she did not love him but because of her forgetful nature..."

Definitely a worthwhile read that I’ll think about for a while and never quite forget the experience of reading. Gorgeous writing and imagery, adored the magical realism. Not my typical cup of tea in terms of pacing and narrative style - but that also is part of what makes the story special. Thanks for the great read @book club friends!!!!
