This was absolutely nothing like what I expected! I put off reading it, thinking it would be a sugary, magical read that people love just for the fact that it’s a “feminist classic”.
Despite the bright, pretty cover and the promised “magical realism”, it was a MASSIVE book in terms of family, passion, politics, history and fate. The magical aspect felt normal, if not a bit mundane, compared to the lives of each MASSIVE character.
Isabella Allende loosely based this novel on her own family history, after the President Salvador Allende (her uncle) was overthrown in a coup supported by the military junta in 1973. The themes of oppression, liberation, power, and feminism strike an even stronger chord with this background in mind. Wait I LOVE HER!!!

Wow. First, I want to start with how I stepped into this genre I would normally not read. I heard this book and Isabel Allende recommended when I went on a recent trip in Santiago, Chile and it definitely lives up to informing the reader about the dark history of this country and strong spirit of its people.
There is a reason I don’t usually read this genre though and struggled with this book: because of the real life situations and terrors (see the list of content warnings) that are very real on this planet. I don’t mind being educated about the world with nonfiction books because you are able to stand at a safe distance. I don’t enjoy it when it enters fiction and especially when you’re inside the head of these terrible people. Feeling what they feel and thinking what they think. It makes my skin crawl.
Without any specific spoilers but clear content expectations: let me just say very early in the book we are introduced to a character and see the world through his eyes as he objectifies and brutally rapes prepubescent girls. This is a main character we have to continue to see through the book and (of course) there is no apology or remorse for the way he dehumanized others. These actions are key to the plot but I had a very hard time getting through this. It did not need to be so explicit and detailing of his thoughts. Plenty of other disturbing events were shared with less detail and still held the proper weight to story. I loathe how, even this day, men around the world continue to do this exact same or worse and continue to not change their way of thinking and seeing women as things. There is no catharsis or justice. Life just goes on and I can’t stand it.
There are many amazing characters, particularly women characters in this book. Do not get me wrong. But I will continue to be sick to my stomach when I think of this book and this character - who I can never think of as “a product of his time” since I know men continue to abuse power in exactly the same way to this day.

La navidad pasada recibí como regalo la primera novela de Isabel Allende La casa de los espíritus, siendo Allende la mas reconocida de las escritoras latinoamericanas siempre me había sentido atraído por leerle y no había tenido la oportunidad, afortunadamente la casa de los espíritus no me ha defraudado. Al ser este libro un clásico de la literatura no es mi intención analizarla pero hay un aspecto que se desarrolla en los últimos capítulos que me llamo mucho la atención y es que ocurren una serie de hechos que me resultaron muy familiares hablando en términos del clima político y social que se vivió y se vive en Venezuela. Es impresionante como una novela escrita en 1982 plantea trazos de situaciones vividas en mi país en 2002: un gobierno de izquierda, personajes de extrema derecha incursionando en un golpe militar, el desabastecimiento de productos y las largas colas para hacerse de ellos, camioneros y trabajadores en paro, radicales de izquierda belicosos, señoras de la alta sociedad con sus cacerolas, en fin para cualquier venezolano que la lea es un texto que nos debe llevar a la reflexión.
Por otra parte es una novela increíble con una narración cargada de humor, con personajes bien construidos. Como aspecto negativo lo único que no me gusto fue la forma en que tantas veces la autora anunciaba de entrada la forma como fallecerían algunos personajes, inclusive en plena presentación de los mismos. También tuve la mala fortuna de contar con una edición (plaza janes) mal labrada , con muchos errores y una impresión de mala calidad.

‘Het huis met de geesten’ is een boek wat het verhaal van een familie verteld, het gaat over vier generaties vrouwen. In het begin wist dit boek mij wel te prikkelen, maar al snel begon ik moeite te krijgen met een mannelijk personage en diens acties. Dit verpeste voor mij wel het zogenaamde leesgenot, maar ik ben ook blij dat ik toch heb doorgezet en verder heb gelezen. Zodra het perspectief zich weer meer richting de vrouwen verschuift, haak ik ook weer aan, en zeker vanaf het moment dat Alba ten tonele verschijnt, ben ik dusdanig geïnvesteerd in het verhaal dat ik de rest van het boek in een ruk uitlees. Vooral het laatste hoofdstuk vond ik indrukwekkend en zette me aan het denken.
Dit boek bevat wat ze noemen ‘magisch realisme’, een term die voor mij nieuw was. Mijn simpele invulling hiervan was dat de realiteit word verweven met wat magische elementen. Uiteindelijk, na mezelf ingelezen te hebben op Wikipedia, bleek de term veel meer in te houden dan ik dacht. “Typerend voor het magisch realisme is dat de magische aspecten zonder pardon en zonder verdere verklaring worden opgenomen in de gepresenteerde werkelijkheid. Het natuurlijke en het bovennatuurlijke worden terloops met elkaar vervlochten.” Weer wat geleerd! Die subtiliteit hoort er dus bij, wat niet wegmaakt dat het van mij, als fantasy liefhebber, best wat magischer had gemogen.
Allende schrijft erg mooi en regelmatig werd ik omver geblazen door haar stijl. Het boek is hier en daar langdradig, maar bleek achteraf het lezen waard. Dit was mijn eerste ervaring met Allende en ik ben nu absoluut nieuwsgierig naar haar verdere werk.
