Amazing, I actually read it in spanish and it became one of my favorite books ever! It really sucks you in and gets your full atention. While i was reading this all I could think about was this story, relating most things to it. Being that it is so detailed im planning on reading it again soon!

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Allende's Eva Luna and Daughter of Fortune before, I had great expectations of this novel. However, I was quite disappointed by characterisation, excessive foreshadowing and lengthy descriptions about despotic politics. The first half of the book was rather enjoyable and despite the shortcomings, which are somewhat acceptable in a debut novel Allende is an excellent storyteller.
