A super cute book!
I read the other Moomins books, but I couldn't get my hands on this one for a while; a friend lent it to me in the end. Imagine my surprise when I found it was more picture book than chapter book! It was not what I expected, but of course the art was beautiful, the characters were introduced, and the story was told for the first time. I will say that I don't love this one as much, mainly because I read the series out of order. Being the first book, the drawings often seem new and rough, and the characters are flat and undefined. That's not unexpected, but it is a touch disappointing when I'm already used to the sprawling world developed by the author later on. It's still a great book for a younger child, and a good introduction to the series for someone not yet into chapter books. It's a good "reading to your child" book, which is often its own genre. I will recommend it to friends and coworkers who are parents and run out of other series to pursue, haha
