the book tackles an important and interesting topic, but its execution is lacking. for example, the story has too many characters but none of them is fleshed out enough

Lemme say that this book is also one of the best book i've ever read, literally in my first list for the best book! The first time i know this book is from tiktok and twitter, esp from tiktok,,full of people who read this book and ended up bawling their eyes out. I don't actually have those interest to buy and read it because i don't really into book,, i only bought some and read and that's it. But it keeps popped out on my fyp and got me curious why these people are crying over this book?? Like is it so sad? I decided to bought this book last year around November 2022 but unfortunately the bookstore i usually go is out of a stock but luckily my dad went to Jakarta and my dad bought it for me. So basically i got this book in December 2022 but keep it sealed till January almost February haha. Lost my mood to read almost 2 months but then i decided to read it at the end of February and finished it around March 25. Took me almost a month to finish because i don't usually read it day to day, besides i prepared my exam so ~ Ok that's not necessary to talk. SO,,i start read it about 1 to 5 pages and keep going, to be honest i still can't get those excited feelings to continue read it again but i tried and ended up love it. I also shared the title of this book to my friend and she curious what is this book talk about and ask me to tell her once i finished. Got me motivation to read it haha. The more i read this book the more i got curious, so basically this book talking a group of college student who fight against the government to become a democratic country. And that's it, i realized that in 1997/1998 there was a forced kidnapping of pro-democracy activists in Indonesia and the amount of missing people and the people who got returned is the same as the book tells. I got goosebumps. The more i searched about this book i found that the author of this book actually interviewing the real victims who got returned, and write this book. It's a novel and ofc fiction book but it's also inspired by the real life tragedy. This book contains a historical, Indonesian literature, romance, family, adult and politics. Almost reached the end, i cried a lot that this book literally gave me all those pain, it hurts. About the romance part, it was great and got me smiling but the adult part it's kinda too much explanation for me. Except for all the flaws, this book still got 5/5 from me, beside the adult/spice part the book itself and the history in it are great explanations and i really enjoyed reading it! The first book ever that got me cried. I'd do anything to read this book again like it's the first time. Love this.

While I appreciate the writer to bring out a heavy theme and shed a light on one of the most horrific series of events in this country, it is unfortunate that the delivery fell flat for me. Too many unnecessary details and characters with little to no development. The plot is stagnant for a book with 500 pages. As a reader, it's very challenging to read paragraph after paragraph with lots of repetitive/formulaic description of events and food recipes, literally (which add nothing to overall story). I would love if the writer actually connects the plots with the real historical events to give more context on the conflict escalation and add more convincing motives for the characters.

All time favorite!
Nobel ini menggunakan alur campuran yg masih aku jarang temui di novel-nove pada umumnya. Semua aspek dalam novel ini juga ditulis dengan sangat baik, mulai dari pengenalan karakter, wordbuilding, konflik hingga epilog. Sangat emosional hingga membuat aku menitikkan air mata.
Ini adalah fiksi sejarah pertama yang aku baca, setelah membaca novel ini aku jadi tertarik untuk membaca lebih banyak fiksi sejarah.
