I love the art style, I love the story, and I love the friendships. When a small boy moves to a new house, he's afraid of what might be in the woods, so he sews up a watchman. But then, he's afraid that the watchman might get lonely...so he sews up another. After doing so, he meets the next door neighbor, and he becomes a little less frightened of what lays beyond.
The use of color (or lack thereof), the use of grayscale, the use of geometrical composition...it's so good. SO GOOD, Y'ALL. This is definitely the perfect story to read with your little one on a stormy day with some hot cocoa!

I really liked this (in the same way I've liked many other books by the Steads): it's got lovely illustrations and a slow, poignant, and emotionally centered view of childhood fears and friendship.
I particularly loved the creativity and belief Peter invests in his pillow/blanket guardians.

Imagination abounds when Harold, new to the neighborhood, builds a scarecrow-like creature out of pillows and blankets to keep scary things on the other side of the bridge. Then he builds the creature a companion creature. Then the two creatures and him make a friend with their new neighbor, taking steps towards being comfortable in their new home. Good story to spark conversation about kids who are moving or have just moved.

I love how absurd and heartfelt Philip Stead's books are. Lenny and Lucy is no different.

This was just a case of "not for me." While I thought the art was quite stunning and several pages were especially lovely, the story was a little too odd for me and my tastes. I'm sure lots of people will love this book but it just didn't end up clicking with me.
