You really can’t go wrong with TJ Klune, and this was very heartwarming and funny like The House in the Cerulean Sea. But…it did fall flat for me in the second half. I felt like, as the reader, I wasn’t trusted to understand the point of the book, and it was just being re-iterated over and over and over again. What I loved most about THITCS was that it showed deep character growth in a slow, realistic, & really inspiring way. In this book, all the good guys got along with each other the whole time and always said the perfect thing (with a few tiny exceptions), and all the bad guys remained bad and one-dimensional. And, the resolution at the end was a very convenient turn of events. However, Arthur’s speech at the government trial was fantastic! As was the dialogue between the kids - hilarious as always. I’d say this is worth the read if you want to spend more wholesome time in Marsyas, but don’t expect the same narrative arcs and character development of the first book. I saw a few other people saying that the author was more focussed on making a point than telling a good story, and I agree 100%.

Another delightful chapter in this series. I really hope the author is not finished yet. Books like this are even more important to read these days and I strongly recommend sticking around for the afterword. These books are fantastic as audiobooks because the narrator brings them to life. I don’t think my brain could do them justice the way he does.

What a joyous, exuberant, triumphant warm hug of a book. It features love in all its many forms, found family, people standing up for what is right, good overcoming evil, the joy of being unapologetically yourself and being loved and accepted for that, a place where all children are safe and nurtured, and advocates and celebrates the ability to be free, regardless of who you are - queer, neurodivergent, or any other type of "different". If you are in despair about the state of the world - and who isn't? - then this book is a perfect dose of literary medicine. It'll remind you afresh of the sort of world you want to live in and reinvigorate you to do what you can to bring it to fruition. And that dedication? 😘

The emotional highs in this book were amazing along with the new depth added to some previous characters. Found myself tearing up several times. I loved this even more than the first book, and the first one charmed me so much I had to buy it for friends.

There are some things in the book that feels overly obvious/hamfisted, but that may be so it can appeal to a wider age group.
