This book had me in the best kind of tears from chapter 1. So infused with hope, love and of course "dead-people" music.

These characters are unhinged and it only adds to the greatness of this book. A sequel that is just as good as the first in the series. The magic is well done, the realistic chaos that can be family ever present, laughs, frustrations and tears included.

I'm having a hard time rating this one. As a sequel, I think it did its job well, but as a story I didn't feel like there were stakes at play that made it seem like there would be huge consequences. I think where this book shines is its characters, I very much enjoyed just hearing what shenanigans the kids were getting in to. Also, a bit preachy at times with little nuance, I can tell the author is an advocate but at certain points in the story I was just eye rolling. Overall, a solid follow up to a perfect original that didn't really need it.

It's a delight to return to the children on this island – they are truly the highlight of this series for me – but I found book 2 more challenging to get through than the first. I understand and appreciate the metaphor of this story and the importance of the message, and I also acknowledge how privileged it is of me to be able to put the book on pause when the xenophobia became too much. But I guess ultimately for me, living in a timeline where our own DICoMY is winning, it's hard to go into a world with the same battle. Like my same issue with Cloud Cuckoo Land, I read to escape.

The first book was a beautiful story of found family, the second was everything I loved most about the first and even more.
Giving many moments of heart warming, eye watering, sweet childhood and familial love. Joyous and comedic moments bright in nature. And emotional depth that only made it all more compelling and tear jerking to read.
With very happy idyllic endings for the characters I already loved and now love even more.
