If the House in the cerulean sea is the subtext this book is the title page. All the same themes were there but with a whole lot less fluff to hide the point of the story. In many ways this book felt like a bunch of intertwining vignettes about the Baker-Parnassus family and the moral questions surrounding living in a society. This book did take me a while to get into but I’m glad I did. I do think that everything was wrapped up a little too neatly that things are never that uncomplicated in the real world. It was nice to pretend, though. I wish we got more Linus/Arthur moments. We got some and they were good, but I just wish we were shown the part of their relationship that is built not on the kids, even though that is very cute. I also haven’t laughed out loud that much to a book in a while. I love Chauncey.

God did I need a read like this. It’s been a hard time to exist the past few months. It was so hopeful and light at times I found myself gazing adoringly at the pages much like I’d expect Arthur to do.

The complexities of this book feel like a mirror to many of the difficulties we’re facing today in the world (especially the US) and I found the sense of community and togetherness in this story inspiring. Will add this book to my pile of “in case of the Bad Times™ : Break Glass”

I love these characters so dearly. I loved getting to spend more time in their world. While it can be oversweet at times, I needed the hope, especially fierce, loving hope in the face of bigotry and cruelty.
