Evidence that Goya was perhaps a forerunner to Expressionism, about one hundred years ahead of his time. These etchings require little more work from the viewer than his previous etchings, mostly due to their dream-like or carnivalesque atmosphere. I couldn’t help but notice that the first plate, Feminine Folly, was sort of a dark, nightmarish, end-of-career bookend to Goya’s early tapestry cartoon, The Straw Manikin. My favorite was Merry Folly, which is one of the only works of art in my memory that caused me to laugh out loud (for all the right reasons!). Funny, bizarre, and slightly disturbing, it instantly became one of my favorite images from Goya. That being said, the remaining plates did not have the same impact for me as his Caprichos or Disasters of War series.
