The Disney version is surprisingly fairly close to this up until the end! Which, by the way, I adored.

Disney did it better in this case. I don’t know, something about the little mermaid making out with the prince’s unconscious body and the weird probation/immortal soul information at the end just didn’t do it for me.

I've always loved this story even though I don't fully understand the moral behind it. Maybe it's because I'm an atheist, and like the little mermaid, I too will become sea foam. I understand it was written from the perspective of a Christian man. But what if it wasn't? What if we contemplated the eternal life of the inhabitants of this tale with the same torment as the little mermaid does? And what makes that eternal life better than our precious, irreplaceable and unresolved experiences?

This is a lovely looking book. The translations of the stories are not great.

3 stars. Meh. The only stories that I enjoyed were The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Red Shoes and The Little Match Girl. Everything else did nothing for me except bore me. The illustrations are beautiful though.
