This was a fun little novel that I originally added to my TBR for Wonderthon, and because it was the author's debut, and it made the Bram Stoker finalist list. What I wasn't expecting was a fun romp through Southeast Texas (a la Beaumont), in a small town where the Evans women run a funeral parlor while also keeping the restless dead underground.

Part vampire novel, part mystery, part multi-generational story, this is a sweet little novel.

I got a kick out of the narrator of the audiobook not knowing how to pronounce Whataburger, though, not gonna lie.

The book was alright, I thought it was going to be more like a vampire slayer type story. The “secret” wasn’t much a of a secret when the characters literally spell it out for you in their interactions & thoughts before it is revealed. Pretty predictable and I wasn’t overly attached to any characters. I liked the dog the most.

The premise of this was golden, and I loved the banter between the women.

It was maybe a touch gorier than it needed to be, and the ending was mean mean mean.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did.  The reviews that made me pick it up didn’t mention the graphic gore at all.  It sounded like a Southern quirky novel with some paranormal, which would have been right up my alley.  It is not that.

I will be up front with you. The multi POV was kind of confusing and daunting at first; especially with the Evans women. But all the POVs intertwine so deliciously. In a light horror mystery. It consistently had me guessing and second guessing myself. It was addicting and unputdownable. I loved this book and I can't wait to read more about the Evans women.
