What a cool story! A mostly-true account of a German immigrant doing his best to make his America a reality, one loaf of gingerbread at a time!
The illustrations are cheerful, and the narrative is bright and bouncy. The author's note at the end gives more factual information than the tone of the story allows.
It will almost certainly inspire further research on Mr. Ludwick!

3.5 stars. My 4-year-old and I enjoyed this one. Dropping a half star because the text wasn't as strong as the rest of the book. The illustrations are very original and the author's note at the back was wonderful. Great for the 4th of July!
This book is absolutely wonderful-from the gingerbread recipe endpages to the interesting and informative author's note-I just loved everything about it. The illustrations are especially clever and now I have a hankering for some gingerbread even though it is the middle of summer!
A wonderful story about a German baker who lived in Philadelphia and volunteered to bake for George Washington's troops.
Great story! It also fits really well into the CCSS for the American Revolution and a nonfiction tie in for a folktales unit.
