This was great and talks about real issues poor people all over the country are experiencing; land developers predatory behavior that especially affects black and brown home owners.

I just read Wandering in Strange Lands: A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots by  Morgan Jerkins, a non-fiction work that touches on the same main issue in this novel. The Gullah Geechee peoples struggle with retain their land. They are getting bought out, priced out, and legislated out of their homes, business, and the opportunity to accrue generational wealth. It was interesting to read the nonfic book about this issue and then read a thriller/mystery revolving around the same island, culture, & issue.

Highly recommend reading them in tandem.

DID NOT FINISH: 75%

I wanted to know how this ended, but the writing style got so hokey that I just couldn’t bring myself to keep reading.  I believe in the ancestors, but the way the ancestral stuff was written here was just a bit too much for me.  Outside of that, the book was good and I likely would’ve finished it otherwise.

Great book!! Loved the story and the tid bits of history.
