A very charming book rife with many colorful characters and a setup/plot that so many of us can relate to. The novel centers on an extended family, bound by blood ties or lifelong friendships. There is a lot of humor and love in these situations and you feel it in the pages. He puts together a nice story and never do moments seem forced. A very natural book that feels at home.

Of the three main characters only one is acknowledged within the narrative as being someone who didn't take responsibility for their actions, but none of the three meaningfully held themselves responsible for circumstances that were directly their fault. Cecily was the most distinctly Mary Sue character I've seen in a while, and maybe 3/4 of this book feels like the author just put his own opinions or observations about the world into their mouth because he perceives these observations as uniquely prescient? Im always up for unlikeable characters, but the narrative seemed to believe these people were not that. There were several moments when a character would make a statement about themselves that directly contradicted their actions, and I thought at first that they were meant to be an unreliable narrator, but this wasn't framed by anything else as an inconsistency so it just read like bad writing. The author has far more faith in his ability and his characters than we ever see evidence for in this book. I don't have an agenda or a desire to hate this, I was honestly excited to read it, but it was so inconsistent, so irritating, there was so much telling and so little showing, that I'm surprised. It reminds me of the poems and old writing professor I had would share with us; infatuated with its own perspective and philosophy but not really offering anything new, insightful, or valuable. The last paragraph is nice, but there are a lot of important moments that feel like they were skimmed over, so they don't have weight that they seem like they're meant to carry. I'm genuinely sorry to say this is aggressively below average, I really wanted to like it, especially given how interesting the premise seemed
