You Only Call When You’re In Trouble is an emotionally charged family drama. The flawed characters are relatable and the story gives you insight into each one’s thoughts around their intertwined lives. There are secrets and trauma. There is love and loss. There is laughter and tears.
I love a cliffhanger but the ending on this one left me wanting more and feeling that it ended too abruptly with too many unresolved issues to be satisfying.

More just as notes for myself:
- it was an interesting story up until the very end.
- I wish we would've heard what the verdict was about her case because it seemed like such a big part of the book's focus. I was disappointed how that was handled.

This book was just okay. I picked it up based on an NPR review, mostly because it was “funny.” Not so much. The beginning dragged, but I liked the ending.
Like a visit with a conservative gay uncle who rants about “that [younger] generation’s eagerness to hunt down, unearth, buff, and polish every scrap of experience that could be put on the trophy shelf of Slights, Microaggressions, and Trauma.” This quote is at page 80 of my hardcover edition—but unfortunately it reflects the underlying theme of the book. And the only queer rep apart from cis gay men is an unhinged non-binary person. I’ll show myself out.
Interesting characters and plot, but felt like parts were dragged out and the ending was very anticlimactic. I would’ve liked to know more about the outcomes of characters’ situations.
