Wow! I was genuinely astonished by this work. Before reading it, I looked at its length and thought that it will just be another book with an intriguing premise that the author did not know where to go with or how to end. I was wrong! The whole work is an exploration of different temperaments and different schools of thought existing in both the world of psychotherapy and the everyday. The ending, while no doubt will irk some, is perfect. This type of exploration necessities ambiguity, to encourage readers to explore further and hinder dogmatic sentiments. Yalom, this just might be one of your best.

To think I spent 8€ on this book and stayed up until 4am to finish it... What a waste. I don’t know Irvin Yalom. One thing I know though, is that he isn’t very skilled at storytelling.

I was ticked off by a lot of things in this book. First of all, the descriptions were so. Goddamn. Long. Like, chill dude. No need to pull a Balzac there. I think most people pick this book up to learn about the wonders of psychoanalysis, not to read about you uselessly describing some random dude’s trophy collection. Secondly, the characters were annoying. Everyone was so horny all the time?? (keep it in your pants, gentlemen!

I love how the different stories come together and get intertwined throughout the book.
The reading experience was great and the plot gave me a lot to think about.

Nonetheless, the past is part of your present consciousness - it forms the spectacles through which you experience the present.

Ernest felt encouraged. It was interesting for him to experience that strange paradox of therapy and supervision: the more unlawful, shameful, dark, ugly stuff you revealed, the more you were rewarded!

I liked it, but it wasn't that thrilling, more funny and quite foreseeable. Yet I had a good time reading it.
