In the year following the close of World War I, New Orleans is a city full of music, food and carnivals. Amid this rollicking atmosphere, a serial killer might be on the loose. Several Italian grocery store owners are being attacked in their own beds and with their own axes! Police are baffled and clues are sparse.
This graphic novel doesn't do as much story telling as just representing the well-researched facts. I wish there had been a bit more narrative. But to make it still worth it, the art is amazing. The line drawings are detailed, rich, and very unique. They do a really good job of setting the tone and enhancing the feel of the city and the time period.
The murders are depicted, but it didn't feel overly voyeuristic or gruesome.

This really feels like a true crime account in graphic novel format. It's succinct, and it doesn't feel too sensationalized.

Rick Geary's illustrations & research always makes for an entertaining look at an otherwise morbid topic!

Some folks suspected that the Axe-man was a specter. Fortunately Geary dismisses that idea with his usual clear-headed approach.
