Update: Books 1-5 have been combined into a single box set. Audio is available on multiple platforms.

This is book 5 in the Nothing Special Series by A.E. Via. While each book covers a different couple - there are events and people introduced in earlier books that make these best enjoyed in order. This review may contain spoilers to earlier books.

I love Steele and Tech’s story. Age gap, office romance, and underestimated character shines. Lots to love with these two. I liked both of their backgrounds and the semi-slowed pace of the development of their relationship.

Unfortunately for me - their story was lost in just too much secondary stuff that I wish had been part of a novella. God & Day drama, their wedding, a case that barely involved Steele or Tech, and the set up for the next book ate up half the time of the book.

That said, I can’t wait for Hart & Freeman’s book.

Narration:
Repetitive, but I don’t have new ways to say how much I love Aiden Snow’s narration. He’s perfect.

This series is like...... laffy taffy. Chewy and sweet and tasty, and absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. Brain candy, if you will. It's like those buddy cop action comedy movies. Police procedure? What's that? Rules? Pfft!

But I don't really care, because this series pulls me in in spite of all the insanity. I know just what I'm getting going in, so I'm never let down.

I loved all the pairings in this one, newbie Steele fits into the gang perfectly, and he meshed quite well with Shawn, or "Tech". These two were hot hot hot, and it was great to see God and Day getting their best happy ending, too.

We also get some glimpses into another book, one about straight guy Hart and newbie Free, and I'm pretty sure I see bad things coming with that douchey cop, Vasquez. We have mention of a possible inside leak, and this guy, coming on so strong, and trying so hard to be a part of this crew? Can the flags be any redder?

Surprisingly, the editing was a fair bit better this time. There were still a few wonky time skips here and there, and someone really needs to teach the author the difference between "coarse" and "course", (beard hair is not course, it's coarse), but other than that, I thought this was very well done.

For brain candy, anyway.

I just finished "Nothing Special Part 5" from the Nothing Special series, and it's quite a ride. The book features multiple POVs, including God and Day, who are getting married, Steel and Tech, our main characters falling in love, and Curtis and Genesis. Although it gets a bit crowded with perspectives, the distinct character mannerisms make it manageable.

A.E. Via excels at crafting characters, and this book is no exception. However, it felt like there was too much of everything and not enough focus on one thing. On my second read-through, I realized I had forgotten about Steel and Tech's couple, and I think they deserved their own book. The wedding was a significant plot point, but I think a special focusing on it with multiple POVs might have been a more enjoyable experience.

The introduction of new characters, especially Free and Hart, sets the stage for the next book. The wedding plot with God and Day is heartwarming, and finally seeing them communicate about it is a great moment. Steel and Tech fall in love, deciding on a happily-ever-after, but the details of their future together are left a bit open-ended.

The book maintains its entertainment factor, but with so much happening, some details are overlooked, and it can feel a bit overwhelming. The wedding is beautiful, a blend of family and close friends, and the honeymoon wraps things up. First time around, I gave it four stars, and that rating still stands. It's a fun read, and I'm eager to dive into the remaining books in the series. With four already out and one yet to be released, the journey continues.

Everything I wanted. I love them so much!!!!! Every time day is on the page, I literally laugh out loud.
This series has grown on me. I’m definitely going to finish it. Even if it’s just to catch glimpses of the other characters. Am so excited for Hart’s story.
This world is so immersive. I feel like all the characters are so real now. Fully developed!
