I had already added this book to my list for this year when my half sister recommended it. She said “I’m on my third read through of the series. On your first read through you basically won’t understand anything until after.” Which is advice I’m glad I had coming in. I now understand why she said that. There are mystery stories where you know from the jump what’s happened and watch as the characters figure it out. There are mystery stories where the protagonist knows more than the reader and explains everything at the end. This is neither. We know what Gideon knows. Nothing more(in fact somewhat less).

Every time I thought this book couldn’t shock me it did. I can’t wait to read the next one.

This book definitely isn't for everyone, it has a pretty slow start and relies on humor that may not land (or be funny) for some. I wasn't bothered by either of these but my biggest issue with this book was that things don't get explained very often, there is a glossary at the back of the book that explains some terminology but I would have preferred if that information was shown more naturally throughout the book. The biggest strength of GtN is the characters, they all feel very distinct which really helps out considering a lot of them are called by their first name, last name, and a nickname. I'll definitely be checking out other works by Tamsyn Muir and reading the rest of the books in the series.

Really cool concept, but the book does SUCH A BAD JOB of explaining how anything works! It cannot decide if it is scifi or fantasy, and the rules of the world are so poorly explained that it is not only confusing, but frustrating.

Hm. This is one of those books that you really enjoy, but for some reason you don't love it. Does that even make sense?
I couldn't really tell you what exactly isn't making me give it a higher rating, except the fighting scenes. This is definitely one of those books where one only understands half of it, but you're still able to enjoy it. However, because of this, when it came to the fighting/action scenes, I completely lost interest because I simply could not picture what was happening, it made me want to skip pages at times - especially the big fight scene (iykyk), which is arguably the part where I should have been the most hooked.

I think that this made me lose a little bit of interest, which is why it is not a higher rating. And as much as I loved the twists and reveals, it felt at times that the book relied too heavily on shock factor.

However, I will be continuing the series, and hopefully it just gets better from here.

Maybe this is just a me thing but for a long cast of characters I felt it unnecessarily confusing to sometimes  their nicknames, then first or last names randomly. I don’t mind flipping back and forth but having to do that and say in the story became stressful because the names were already unusual. I didn’t start enjoying it until the last 5 chapters and it that was the beginning of the story I wouldn’t have mind.
