This book…. It gave everything you needed it too. 9 houses that serve the Emperor are competing to becoming lyctors. Each necromancer has a cavalier, except Harrowhark the Ninth. So she tricks sergeant of the ninth house Gideon Nav into being her cavalier for the trials in return for her freedom.

Gideon, a badass sword wielding lesbian, wants nothing to do with Harrow. But will do anything for her freedom. Together they face the trials the Emperor has put in place for the nine houses.

This was absolutely phenomenal. Muir writes a captivating story of witt, heroics and horror. The best way I can describe it is the necromancer hunger games with a murder mystery. ONE FLESH ONE END, BITCH!HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This book was nothing less than amazing. Why haven't I picked it up before? Well, I guess I didn't know I needed a sci-fi/ fantasy with necromancy, sword fights, sickening gore, terrifying horrors and deliciously dark humour. I did need it.

The book is filled with important details, a wide range of characters, surprising twists, turns and hidden gems, and my ADHD brain forced me to to stop up at times and re-read certain parts, but that's not a complaint. I'm often an impatient reader, so the fact that I'm invested enough to go back and re-read earlier patagraphs, is probably one of the best compliments I can give an author.

What more can I say? I loved this book. So good. Now, I'm diving into the next one in the series. I have no idea what will happen next, but I am certain that it will hurt, confuse me and amaze me. Can't wait.

Found this in a booktok recs for people who liked Arcane (aka me) and shortly after saw someone online calling Gideon and Vi very similar so decided to give it a try.
Ngl I couldn't drop it once I began reading the first page. It's been the first book I read in less than a week for the first time in ages. I laughed and yell and sobbed.
