Beautifully written with an incredibly potent atmosphere with morbid, dreary tones that contrast wonderfully against Gideon's funny, shitty teenage sense of humor within her internal narration. The worldbuilding is incredible and the concepts presented can only be described as intensely badass, and the characters are explored beautifully despite the breadth of the cast. The mystery is rich and rewarding, the setup for the sequel is engaging and exciting, each turn was both unexpected and set up beautifully. One of the best pieces of sci-fi / fantasy fiction i've read in a long, long time.

Me, reading act 1 through 3: oh dang what a great book! Snarky himbo lesbian narrator, vibrant side characters, amazing dense worldbuilding, some murder mysteries, skeletons galore, this is so enjoyable, I see why this gets recommended so much! :)

Me reading acts 4 and 5: I am in pieces on the floor. I am a broken husk of a person.
This gave me the beautiful Enemies to Power Couple I was so desperately craving, and then immediately yanked out of my small gay hands. The pool scene put the dagger in my heart, and the final fighting scenes pushed it through. I have not loved a protagonist as much as I loved Gideon, and a relationship as much as Gideon & Harrow, in a long time, and now she's DEAD?? Fuck this.
 10 out of 5 stars.

At first I thought this was going to be another victim of its own popularity as it took me a while to come around, but without the epic expectations set by other readers I would have loved it from the start I think.

It’s funny, dark, and genuinely entertaining.
