She was an easy read! I don’t think I would’ve read this if it weren’t our book club pick, so I appreciate the change in my usual reading. Overall it was silly goofy, I do think the plot felt all over the place but I didn’t really see this book as a serious read so I didn’t mind. No major notes on it, I enjoyed it but she didn’t stick out to me!

This was a fun ride! Sci-fi isn’t my usual genre but I was intrigued by the cover (who doesn’t love a cat in a suit?) and the idea of inheriting an uncle’s supervillain business.

Starter Villain had lots of dialogue and felt very cinematic like I was watching an action-packed comedy, and I would’ve liked more character development of Charlie and the side characters including his late uncle Jake, but I especially loved Charlie’s relationship with his cats Hera and Persephone. The class commentary and plot line involving the dolphin employees unionizing was also refreshing. Things wrapped up a little too neatly for me and I had to suspend disbelief, but that’s to be expected in a story this fantastical and fast-paced. All in all it’s a good quick palate cleanser of a book. I also liked the bonus short story at the end featuring Hera.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this book turned out to be an absolute ride. Strangely heartfelt in unexpected places, it's a quick read with spectacular setpieces and plenty of explosions, if one is into that. The prose is quick and sails off so smoothly that the book is easy to devour. It's definitely made me interested in reading more from Scalzi.
