I don't know what I was expecting, but this book turned out to be an absolute ride. Strangely heartfelt in unexpected places, it's a quick read with spectacular setpieces and plenty of explosions, if one is into that. The prose is quick and sails off so smoothly that the book is easy to devour. It's definitely made me interested in reading more from Scalzi.

In my top books of the year, and such a fun one to recommend, especially to cat lovers. Great depth in the characters and clever dialogue. Motivations and actions were carefully thought through making it a bizarrely consistent fantasy novel.
