I really loved the premise of this book: lesbian, tattooed, rock-and-roll nun solves an arson in her New Orleans convent school. I was sold. And this book delivered a memorable main character in Sister Holiday and her array of fellow nuns, as well as a vibrant, mystical and lyrical depiction of New Orleans. I was ready to give it four or five stars - but the last third of the book just didn't deliver. The villain came out of nowhere and simply felt unjustified, traumatic scenes felt like unnecessary additions to the overall plot, and the ending left me unsatisfied. It's a shame, because I adored the tone, setting and characters in the book!

There is content that I couldn't get past, that disturbed my experience. What started a NoLa teacozy murder, took a swift dive into themes I just was not prepared for, which is my fault for not researching more thoroughly before downloading it (audiobook read by Mara Wilson, who is an excellent reader), but shouldn't a reader be able to look at a standard back cover and some reviews and have that be enough? Who wants homework? Trigger Warnings aren't going to hurt the story, I promise you.

okay this book really surprised me because i expected something more explicitly messy in the sense of LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS for Sister Holiday. WITH THAT SAID, the book has good commentary on the harm several powerful institutions have on society and the religious devotion also seems over glorified on purpose. i love/hate Sister Holiday for what she ends up doing. i need to see more of Holiday x Riveau... everyone is messy af and i love it

There’s not a whole lot of mystery-solving that happens here, it’s mostly slow-developing exposition and revelations. Scorched Grace seems to be focused on introducing the protagonist, Sister Holiday, for the launch of a series.

Also, Sister Holiday has too many contradictory interests and characteristics. This made it pretty difficult to understand/get-on-board with the character.

There is a stained glass motif that is not particularly emphasized, but is really good!

So unnecessarily traumatising. Maybe it's a good book if you don't mind that sort of thing, but please take care of yourself and check the content warnings. This book is so much darker than I expected and I wouldn't have read it if I'd known.
