could’ve been a bit more intersectional
This is one of those required reads for everyone: male or female. There was one powerful statement that really stood out for me: "[Virginia Wolfe's] demands for liberation for women were not merely so they could do some of the institutional things men did (and women still do) but to have the freedom to roam geographically and imaginatively." It's so easy to see the progress we made and be happy about it and not press on, until you read a sentence like that. It became very clear why Solnit focused much of these essays on the rape & abuse women still suffer regularly - as women we still aren't safe, we still can't roam freely without fear and we're still being told things like "Don't dress provocatively and it won't happen to you." (As is, a woman dressed up at midnight was ASKED to be sexually assaulted.)
Solnit does a great job of comparing this images to the seemingly innocent ones; A male female discussion at a party which goes downhill after he begins to explain things to her, dismissing the fact she's an expert in the field they are discussing. It becomes clear that while we have taken the first of thousand steps, there is still a long road ahead in the fight for women's equality to men.

Clear, reasonable, a bit funny, even though it’s a serious topic. Reading it now is probably less impactful than it was 10 years ago, because everyone is already acquainted with the idea and the implications of mansplaining, which just serves to prove the impact that essay had. Very importante nonetheless. Glad I read it.
A collection of essays. Some felt out of place and weren't quite my thing, but the others were so good.

A great read on Feminism with moments that resound of Solnit's expertise and well-crafted voice. But I hate to think of the book never to be written after she published this collection of blog posts. I would have much preferred the full-Solnit exploration of feminism akin to walking in Wanderlust.
