Some parts felt a little like feminism 101, but overall a fun and interesting read!

i think this book has a place in conversations for sure but it just felt like it was missing a lot of the nuance and intersectionality of modern feminism. it also was definitely written at a level for someone who doesn’t necessarily read feminist literature regularly, kinda like “how to explain feminism to a man” which again has its place but is full of the repetitive tropes you always hear. loved the virginia woolf discussion tho :)
I almost gave it three stars. I think I was expecting something a little different with this book. Maybe more suggestions that men could do so that women could understand them better. I think a more appropriate title would be "Men Explain Why you Rape Women so Much." Since the author went on and on about the grim stories of rape that made me cringe. The statistics surprised me though.
Men have problems.
However, as I listened to this book I realized that these kinds of books probably do almost no good whatsoever to the perps. Those who read these books aren't suffering with the issues of raping women for example. So it is like preaching to the choir. If the author wanted to offer more solutions to this problem then that would make for an important read.

The statement, "The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off," is incredibly true. I found this collection of essays made me angry and depressed, yet enlightened all at the same time. The essay on Virginia Woolf was perhaps the one I liked the least, but found the majority of them put into words concepts and feelings that I was already thinking and feeling but wasn't sure how to articulate. She provided some good ideas on how we can expand feminism to encompass everyone, as well as how it should incorporate other struggles, to achieve a better, more equal society. Some of the essays really made me think about my own experience, and realize how much I too have been conditioned by society - how often I arrange my day to avoid being in specific places or situations after dark and how I walk from a building to my car at night with my key between my fingers just in case I need to defend myself. I don't know how many men are cognizant of the fact that they never have to think this way. I don't agree necessarily with everything that the author says in the book or has said on social media etc. but she does often make very salient arguments. I appreciate her work.
¿reafirmarselo a alguien?
