I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great read that perfectly blends Black culture, magic, fantasy, and family. Both the characters and the storyline worked well together. The characters were similar to others I've seen before (think about a younger Shuri from the Black Panther comics and Percy Jackson from the Rick Riordan series) but they also were unique enough to make me invested in them and what they would do next.
The storyline kept me on my toes waiting to see what would happen next and what the overall outcome would be. I can definitely say, that while I felt like I knew what the plot twist would be, I was still not expecting it to happen in the way that it did.
Overall, I think this was an excellent first book and I'm looking forward to seeing what Thomas does with the rest of the series!

I am definitely biased towards Angie Thomas, Jackson, New Orleans, the term “home training”, and supernatural middle grade fiction, but I love this and hope it becomes a 50 book series.
An engaging fantasy read that offers connections to African American history in the US.

I absolutely loved this. I think magical child stories are becoming my absolute favourite genre, because Morrigan Crow, Amari, Onyeka, and now Nic Blake are amongst my favourite middle grades I’ve ever read
