This was a great read aloud with my 11 year old daughter. Fast-paced plot with some good twists. Somewhat predictable, but we really enjoyed it regardless. Nice blend of African and African American folklore, with some Wakanda-esque tech and visuals (at least how the city and people were described). JP might have been my favorite character, my daughter liked Nic of course ;-) Having read Angie Thomas before, I thought she did a wonderful job of weaving social commentary and her unique voice to a middle grade fantasy adventure. Would recommend this middle schoolers due to some intense scenes. Looking forward to the next one in the series!

Exciting, non-stop action with layers of African American history and mythology. Ending was satisfying while also setting up at least one sequel. I can't wait for the next one!

I really wish the phrase "long time no see" was not used, especially by a shapeshifter/werewolf. It really seems like editors and writers should have phased that phrase out by now.
