⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. I loved this story full of magic and destiny, and the audiobook is excellent. Nic is a Remarkable in an Unremarkable world, and is dying to learn how to do the cool magic that her dad does. But when she discovers the true identity of her favorite author, his relation to her dad, and finds the mom she thought abandoned her at birth, she is thrust into a crazy adventure, all with her trusty hellhound at her side. Hand to fans of Tristan Strong, Aru Shah, and Serwa Boateng. Recommended for grades 5-8.

I loved how Angie Thomas has weaved multiple stories and folk tales together. It is brilliant how Nic’s story is influenced by the Stevie James books which reminded me of the Harry Potter series in a way. JP is my favorite character, he is so optimistic and strong, I think we could all use a best friend like him. Also, he makes a hilarious duo with Alex: “JP and Alex slap palms. I ignore that it takes them three tries to get it right. Neither of them is coordinated” (Thomas 322).
Throughout the book micro-aggressions are mentioned, the blurb also says “It’s not easy being remarkable in a world were standing out is dangerous”. However, it did take me until the Author Note to realize how important and special this book is, representation in fantasy of BIPOC or black people is very important! I’m so glad that this book exists and hope that it can offer an escape to everyone in these trying times. I would definitely recommend this book!
I did gave this four stars, because the development of the villain, wasn’t that strong for me. I initially really liked Uncle/godfather Tyrant… It sometimes felt as if the book wanted to do too much while it already was 330 pages long. That’s my only critique on this.

What a fantastic book. It's so much fun, the world is beautifully described, and the characters are very loveable. Cannot wait for the second book.
I think I will love everything Angie Thomas writes. The representation is incredible for a middle grade novel, not glazing over the real life stuggles of being a black girl. The magic world is super interesting as well, and perfectly integrated into the story so I'm never left confused and I know exactly what is going on. This is everything that I love in a middle grade novel. Only deducted a half star because I didn't absolutely LOVE it. But because of how much I loved the main character, I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series.
Thank you to HarperCollins Children's Books, Balzer + Bray, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review.

This was eeeeeeverything, and I wish I had had this when I was a kid. Wonderful!
I wanted Thomas to branch out more than anyone, but this book doesn’t quite do it for me. Mystery/adventure/magic meets black pride. There is a little too much going on.
But, glad she wrote it & I hope she only gets better with time.
