I think that mainly two aspects of the book made the reading experience so dragging for me.

Firstly, the narration felt too scattered. The story is constantly jumping between time periods (like a patchwork of different vignettes, sometimes also really brief)
and it was difficult for me to keep track of the timeline, of events that had already taken place and characters previously introduced. At a certain point, I swear the same scene was repeated three times only in a slightly different way, I was really confused.

Secondly, I am not a big fan of travel writing. The sections focusing on the main character's journey through Siberia seemed endless, full of so many details and descriptions, they just bored me.

Religion is very relevant and often mentioned, so if, like myself, you do not vibe much with it, maybe it's not the right story for you. You'd think I would have guessed that from the title alone, but I am a bit of a moron and, also, I went into the book knowing only vaguely what the story was about.

All in all, I felt quite detached from the characters and I did not get on with the narrative style.
