3.5
I attempted to read this book several years ago and put it down only a couple chapters into it. I don't remember why I didn't finish it, but when I picked it up 3 days ago, I was immediately caught up in the narrative and all the possible directions it could take. The story was a slow build, involving many avenues of investigation, but ultimately came together well.
My 3.5 star rating comes from two things:
1.) I found myself bored with the dialouge pretty regularly. Almost every sentence starts with someone's name, and nobody says the name of the person they are speaking to at the beginning of EVERY line. The information from characters was good, and their interactions captured the dynamic of Ellie's relationships well, but the actual writing became monotonous quickly.
2.) I am actually pretty disappointed with the abrupt ending. One small chapter to wrap things up (some of which do wrap up nicely), and that short space is not enough to do justice to the life Ellie leads after everything that takes place in the book.
Outside of those two complaints, overall, I enjoyed the book and may even read it again in a year or two!
